Howard Mountain is located in the center of the Never Summer Range, at an altitude of 12,810', between Mt. Cirrus and Mt. Cumulus. It has an odd shaped ridge protruding from it, to the east of which defines the Hitchens Gulch and Big Dutch Creek.
The derivation of its name is not well understood, but there were some Howards that mined in Lulu City, not too far from Howard Mountain, in the 1880's.#
